Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo has sustained a muscle injury in his calf ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he is included in Uruguay’s squad.
Araujo was named by coach Marcelo Bielsa but has returned to Barcelona for treatment to aid his recovery.
The Uruguay national team issued a statement clarifying the situation: "To help resolve a muscle strain, the player will receive medical treatment from professionals who have treated him previously. The coaching staff and the AUF medical team agreed with this decision. He will not participate in group activities on Monday, rejoining the team on Tuesday the 9th, when they will travel that night to the 2026 FIFA World Cup."
According to Ole, it is considered highly unlikely that Araujo will play in Uruguay’s first match of the tournament. However, hopes remain that he will recover in time for the games against Cape Verde on June 22 and Spain on June 27.
The club has not provided an official timeline for his return to play. His absence creates uncertainty regarding the lineup for Uruguay’s opening game.
