Barcelona’s search for an experienced centre-back has put Athletic Club defender Aymeric Laporte on their radar.

The Spain international impressed during the 2026 FIFA World Cup and is considered to possess the experience and quality to strengthen Hansi Flick’s squad, according to Spanish media.

However, despite Barcelona’s admiration, there have been no formal offers or negotiations, and the situation remains at the level of interest rather than active talks.

Laporte is aware of Barcelona’s attention, but any move would need discussions with Athletic, where he is under contract until 2028, giving the Basque club full control over his future.

Barcelona’s sporting director Deco has not contacted Athletic’s football director Mikel Gonzalez or the player’s representatives, and earlier rumors about Laporte being offered to Barcelona have not materialized into formal talks.

Athletic is expected to stand firm in negotiations, especially given tense relations following recent transfers between the clubs. Traditionally, Athletic protects key players through release clauses rather than lengthy negotiations.

While speculation estimates Laporte’s value around €15 million, those close to the situation suggest this figure underestimates his true market worth.

Although the interest from Barcelona is genuine, a transfer appears unlikely at this stage.
