Barcelona remains fully committed to signing Julian Alvarez this summer but has started exploring alternative striker options as a precaution in case negotiations with Atletico Madrid stall.
According to Spanish media, club president Joan Laporta, sporting director Deco, and coaching staff have engaged in discussions to identify other suitable forwards. Alvarez is still the preferred target of head coach Hansi Flick due to his movement, pressing, and versatility across the frontline, but Atletico’s unwillingness to negotiate has prompted Barcelona to prepare backup plans.
Darwin Nunez has emerged internally as one of the candidates considered should the club need to move on from Alvarez. Nunez recently rejoined Al-Hilal’s pre-season training but remains sidelined due to foreign-player registration restrictions in the Saudi Pro League, leaving his situation uncertain. Barcelona aims to find a forward who can enhance Flick’s attacking options and fit tactically.
Reports also indicate that Barcelona has considered increasing their offer for Alvarez with performance-related bonuses, potentially nearing €120 million, although Atletico remains resistant to strengthening a direct La Liga rival.
While the club continues to hold out hope for a breakthrough in Alvarez’s transfer, preparations for alternatives are underway to ensure readiness before the start of the new season.
