Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski shared his thoughts on the performances of young Spanish talent Lamine Yamal at the 2026 World Cup. According to the Polish forward, Yamal did not show his best football during the tournament, partly due to injury and a long period without playing time.
"Honestly, no, we didn’t see his best at this tournament. The best performance, the best Lamine for me, wasn’t last season but two seasons ago," Lewandowski told ESPN.
He pointed out that Yamal came to the World Cup after an eight-week injury layoff and didn't have enough time to fully prepare, starting the tournament immediately after recovery. Despite this, Lewandowski stressed the player's high quality and the excellent cooperation within the Spanish squad.
"The Spain players and the team helped Lamine, and Lamine also helped the whole team. I think this cooperation was perfect," he added.
Furthermore, Lewandowski expressed joy for his former Barcelona teammates who succeeded at the World Cup. He explained why he supports the Spanish national team: "I know a lot of players from Spain and I spent so much time in Barcelona with them, so I supported them a lot. Of course, I personally only know Leo from Argentina, but I know he won the last World Cup. That's why I support the Spanish national team because if you play with them and spend a lot of time together, then it’s easier to support this team."
Lewandowski is impressed by the youth in the squad and their future prospects: "I was happy because I knew they were ready to win the World Cup. They are very young, and the future is ahead of them."
