Frenkie de Jong, 29, has returned to FC Barcelona following his participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. He sustained a knee injury during the round of 16 match against Morocco and was unable to finish the game.

De Jong visited Barcelona's training ground last Friday and underwent medical tests to evaluate his physical condition. He is pending further examination by the club's medical staff. It is yet unclear whether the club will release detailed information about the injury.

There is a possibility that de Jong may require surgery, which could sideline him for approximately four months. No specific recovery timeframe has been announced.

In case of an extended absence, coach Hansi Flick has options within the squad to cover the midfielder's role. Marc Bernal, who substituted for de Jong during a previous injury last season, remains a primary alternative, along with Gavi and promising youth players Tommy Marqués and Xavi Espart. Meanwhile, Casadó is not in the coach's plans and is being considered for transfer.
