FC Barcelona are not currently planning to sign a new centre-back this summer, despite various offers and recent links with Aymeric Laporte.
According to reports, head coach Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco believe the existing central defensive options are enough to compete in the 2026/27 season.
Barcelona currently has Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, Ronald Araujo, Andreas Christensen, and Gerard Martin available in central defence, with promising talents also coming through La Masia.
This depth has convinced the club that spending money on an additional defender at this transfer window stage is unnecessary.
Specifically, the chances of an immediate move for Laporte have been downplayed. The Spain international was linked with Barca following a strong World Cup alongside Cubarsi, but there are no advanced or active negotiations.
Deco continues to receive calls and proposals about defenders, and Barcelona is monitoring opportunities, but signing another centre-back is not a current priority.
The situation could shift if an unexpected departure occurs before the window closes. Ronald Araujo seems to be the only senior centre-back whose exit was considered possible, but this is now seen as very unlikely. The Uruguayan has returned for pre-season and is determined to fight for his spot under Flick.
Without a major exit, Barcelona’s focus will likely remain on reinforcing other areas of the squad.
This approach makes sense considering the options at Flick’s disposal. Cubarsi has established himself at the top level, Eric provides versatility, Christensen brings experience, and Araujo offers physical strength, giving the coach a range of profiles.
Laporte could be an attractive market option given his strong chemistry with Cubarsi for Spain. However, unless the defensive picture changes, Barca appear unwilling to take on additional salary and transfer costs just because an interesting player is available.
