Ines Garcia, girlfriend of Barcelona’s rising star Lamine Yamal, faced a wave of harsh criticism and online abuse after Spain’s celebration of their 2026 World Cup victory.
After Spain’s 1-0 win against Argentina in the final at MetLife Stadium, Garcia appeared on the pitch alongside Yamal and the national team. However, a series of images showing little interaction between the couple sparked rumors about their relationship status and triggered a flood of hateful comments.
In response, Garcia posted a detailed statement, reported by the Spanish newspaper "Marca", addressing the abuse. “I have been reading the comments about me for hours and, despite trying to appear strong, I am also human. I feel and I cry,” she said. She emphasized the difference between constructive criticism and insults that escalate into humiliation and wishing harm.
Garcia affirmed she has never hurt Yamal or anyone else and is simply living her own life. She called on social media users to show empathy and humanity, noting that her family and friends are concerned for her wellbeing. “I have good days and difficult ones, just like anyone else,” she added.
Garcia expressed hope that the internet will someday stop glorifying cruelty, urging everyone to choose empathy over hatred. Her statement highlighted the vulnerability of those close to football stars, reminding fans that they are human too.
