Ronald Araujo, the 27-year-old central defender of FC Barcelona, has resumed training with the first team today after participating in the 2026 World Cup and recovering from a calf injury he sustained during a session with the Uruguay national team.
The injury occurred during training with Uruguay, but Araujo remained with the squad despite a quick trip to Madrid for treatment. Uruguay's team was eliminated in the group stage on June 26. After three weeks of vacation and a medical examination at Barcelona's training center, he has fully recovered and is now preparing under coach Hansi Flick.
Araujo is starting his seventh season with Barcelona and his second as team captain. Despite strong competition among central defenders, including Cubarsí, Gerard Martí, Eric Garcia, and the recently renewed Christensen, he aims to secure a spot in the starting lineup. An option to gain more minutes could be playing as a right-back, although there is tough competition there as well from Jules Koundé, Garcia, and possibly João Cancelo.
Having renewed his contract in January 2025 until June 2031, Araujo’s future playing time will depend on the coach’s decisions as preseason progresses. The calf injury has been resolved, recovery is complete, but final selection decisions remain with Hansi Flick.
