Barcelona’s youth team Juvenil A has officially commenced its campaign in the Champions Cup after securing their league title last weekend. This Saturday, they meet CD Tenerife away in the first leg of the quarterfinals of this prestigious youth tournament.

The Champions Cup format involves seven champions of the División de Honor groups plus the best second-placed team by coefficient — this year Tenerife qualified as hosts. Led by coach Pol Planas, Barcelona aims to overcome last season’s heartbreak when, under Juliano Belletti, they failed to advance past the quarterfinals after a cruel penalty shootout loss to Valencia.

Planas emphasized the squad’s positive mentality and serious mindset, highlighting that the players understand the weight of representing Barcelona and approach each match with a winning attitude. Tenerife, known as the highest-scoring team in the División de Honor, presents a significant challenge as all their players are in the third year of this youth category.

Among the 22 selected players traveling to Tenerife are Alex Campos and Shane Kluivert, who spent much of the season with Barça Atlètic. The fitness of Hamza Abdelkarim remains uncertain as he trains with a protective mask ahead of the match.

The second leg is scheduled for May 14 at the Johan Cruyff Stadium. The winner will face the victor of UD Las Palmas vs. Celta de Vigo in the semifinals. Other quarterfinal matches include Valencia vs. Granada and Real Madrid vs. Athletic Club. Barcelona last won the Champions Cup in 2022, a motivation for the young squad to once again lift the trophy.

Firstly, participation in the Champions Cup reflects the high standard of La Masia’s youth development, confirming the team’s ability to compete among the best young sides in Spain. Success here often serves as a springboard for players progressing toward the first team.

Secondly, reintegration of players like Campos and Kluivert emphasizes a balanced development strategy, mixing experience from Barça Atlètic with youth, crucial during a competitive schedule. This flexibility is key to managing player growth and readiness.

Thirdly, facing Tenerife, a highly potent attacking team, provides a vital test for both the defensive and offensive frameworks set by Planas. The match will help identify strengths and areas needing improvement ahead of potentially tougher elimination rounds, building resilience and cohesion.

Barcelona will strive to advance from this stage, upholding its tradition of producing top talents and reinforcing its position in national and international youth football.
