Barcelona’s plans for Brian Farinas changed significantly ahead of the 2026/27 season as the promising midfielder was close to a loan move to Girona for regular first-team minutes. However, Frenkie de Jong’s injury forced head coach Hansi Flick to rethink this option.

De Jong cut short his summer break due to notable discomfort in his right knee. Medical staff detected severe swelling and joint instability, with internal bleeding preventing a full MRI scan, delaying an exact diagnosis. Early estimates suggest a potential absence of four to six months if ligament damage is confirmed.

Given this uncertainty, Flick personally requested that Farinas remain with the senior squad during the pre-season to provide cover in midfield and assess his readiness for first-team football.

Farinas’ versatility stands out as he can operate as a defensive, central, or attacking midfielder. Coming off an impressive campaign with Barcelona Atlètic — five goals and seven assists — he approaches the new season with growing confidence.

Consequently, negotiations for Farinas’ loan have been put on hold. His current role is as a flexible squad member close to the first team, prepared to step in across multiple midfield roles as Barcelona copes with De Jong’s injury.
