Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick remains optimistic despite the painful Copa del Rey loss to Atlético Madrid, viewing the defeat as a lesson the squad must learn from. He assessed that Atlético came prepared for a physical battle and performed at a level comparable to Champions League fixtures, particularly in the opening 45 minutes when Barca lacked a competitive attitude and failed to win duels.

Flick pointed out that Atlético were more dynamic, smarter and showed higher quality, and that refereeing controversies in the second half do not change the core problem — Barça were simply outplayed in key aspects. He frames the issue as one of mentality and concentration rather than tactics, and he expressed faith in the squad’s quality and ability to improve.

Speaking at his press conference, the coach said he saw the right signs in training: players showed confidence and scoring, and that must be translated into match performance. He stressed that defeats happen, but the reaction matters. With much of the season still to play, anything is possible if the team operates collectively and everyone gives a full commitment.

Flick also referenced other recent games, noting that Barça did not perform well against teams of high quality such as Chelsea and Atlético. He reminded that the Chelsea match was made harder by long periods playing with ten men. Still, he prefers to leave those results behind and focus on what comes next, arguing there is no reason to abandon the approach that has delivered significant success during his tenure.

According to the coach, the Copa loss was largely down to a collective failure to press and defend effectively: several players were below their usual individual standards. Flick accepted some responsibility but urged against overreaction and loud criticism of his system, which tends to surface only when things go wrong.

He reiterated that his style — often dubbed 'Flick Ball' — remains the right way forward, and stressed that it is now up to the players to believe in themselves and execute the plan on the pitch.
