On June 7, 1953, the old Les Corts stadium witnessed one of Barcelona’s most remarkable victories. In the first leg of the Copa del Generalísimo semifinals, coached by Fernando Daucik, Barça overwhelmed Atlético Madrid with an 8-1 win at home.
The team showed confidence from the start. At five minutes, Basora passed to César, playing as center forward, who skillfully turned and beat the goalkeeper to open the scoring. Ten minutes later, Moreno, in a brilliant individual run, dribbled past defenders and scored a close-range goal to double the lead.
Atlético managed to score after a defensive lapse, but this was quickly answered by Moreno’s third Barça goal, as he dribbled through three opponents before firing a left-footed shot. At the 38th minute, Kubala converted a penalty awarded for a handball.
Barça kept dominating in the second half. Basora and Kubala exchanged slick passes resulting in the fifth and sixth goals. Later, Basora assisted Kubala who then netted the seventh. Just one minute before full time, Kubala chose to pass instead of shooting, allowing Basora to score the eighth and seal the overwhelming victory.
Atlético took a narrow 2-1 win in the second leg, but Barcelona comfortably advanced to the final. There, at Chamartín stadium, they defeated Athletic Bilbao 2-1 to claim the title. This semifinal remains one of the brightest highlights in the club’s history at Les Corts.
