Barcelona’s sporting director Deco is reportedly hesitant to offer Ferran Torres a new contract because of financial constraints linked to a clause from his transfer from Manchester City. According to reports from Spanish media, this clause is causing the club to reconsider its long-term plans for the Spanish forward.
Torres joined Barcelona in January 2022 for an initial €55 million plus €10 million in performance-related add-ons. However, the club would have to pay an additional €7 to €8 million to Manchester City if they agree to a formal contract extension with the player, pushing the total cost of the deal up to around €73 million.
This financial hurdle is making Barcelona officials cautious about renewing the contract of Torres, who remains an important but not guaranteed starter under coach Hansi Flick. Club insiders believe that selling Torres this summer is a more sensible option financially, allowing them to avoid the additional payment and secure a transfer fee instead of risking losing him on a free transfer when his contract expires.
Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain has emerged as a potential destination for Torres. The Ligue 1 side is monitoring the situation and looking for attacking reinforcements. Reports suggest that Torres may have given a "green light" to a possible move to the Parc des Princes, especially with other signings at Barcelona potentially cutting into his playing time.
Last season, Torres contributed significantly to Barcelona's attack with 24 goal involvements (21 goals and 3 assists) in 49 appearances. Notably, he played as a centre-forward in 38 matches, showing his versatility beyond his natural winger position.
At the ongoing World Cup, Torres has mostly been used as an impact substitute for Spain, starting only once against Cape Verde and providing the assist for the winning goal against Portugal in the round of 16.
