Joao Cancelo's future remains uncertain following a positive loan period at Barcelona in the latter half of the 2025-26 season.

According to Spanish media, despite Barcelona’s intention to keep the Portuguese defender permanently, the Saudi club Al-Hilal has called Cancelo back for preseason once he completes his international duties with Portugal at the 2026 World Cup.

Cancelo still has one year left on his contract with Al-Hilal but has publicly criticized the club, mentioning issues such as not being registered properly in the Saudi league, contrary to the promises made. Al-Hilal is scheduled to begin preseason training in early July, followed by a training camp from July 15 to August 4.

Cancelo joined Barcelona during the winter transfer window, impressing with his performances and making clear his affection for the club. However, a final decision on a permanent transfer has yet to be reached as negotiations between the clubs continue.

It appears Cancelo will return to Al-Hilal for preseason preparations before any long-term decision about his footballing future is made.

This situation leaves his future at Barcelona in doubt and the club’s hopes of securing him on a permanent deal uncertain.
