Frenkie de Jong is once again sidelined by a serious injury that threatens to keep him off the pitch for several months and raises concerns within Barcelona’s management about his long-term fitness. Over the past six years, the midfielder has endured multiple muscular problems alongside significant ankle and knee injuries.

The most challenging stretch began in September 2023 when de Jong suffered a syndesmosis injury to his right ankle against Celta Vigo, causing him to miss 14 matches. After making a return, he reinjured the same ankle twice — once in March 2024 against Athletic Club and again during El Clasico in April — leading to more than five months out and forced him to miss Euro 2024 with the Netherlands.

His latest setback, a complete rupture of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his right knee, is a fresh blow. Despite the severity, both the club and de Jong have opted against immediate surgery, choosing conservative treatment with a re-evaluation scheduled in about three weeks to decide on next steps. Should surgery become necessary, the expected recovery time is five to six months, potentially delaying his return until January 2027.

Barcelona’s cautious stance stems from lessons learned in previous cases of players like Ansu Fati and Samuel Umtiti, where hasty or delayed operations prolonged recoveries. Medical staff are focusing on reducing inflammation while closely monitoring the knee’s response over time.

The club has expressed frustration at how the injury was initially handled, as swelling during early examinations after de Jong’s return from the World Cup complicated diagnosis. Early detection might have enabled a more straightforward and quicker rehabilitation.

Now, the challenge lies in carefully managing the workload and recovery process of the 29-year-old captain, who is entering a phase where preserving his health becomes increasingly critical. Although Barcelona’s midfield has capable alternatives, none can fully replace de Jong’s ball control and influence when at peak form.

De Jong has proven resilient in overcoming significant injuries before, but this situation calls for patience and strategic management to have him fully available for the crucial stages of the season.
