Núñez has two years left on his contract, and Al Hilal invested around €55 million last summer. Additionally, the player’s substantial salary package further complicates negotiations.
Meanwhile, MLS side Atlanta United have made the first approach to Al Hilal for a potential season-long loan with an option to buy. They are preparing to replace star forward Emmanuel Latte Lath, who appears set to depart. Despite this American interest, Núñez prefers to stay in European football, aligning with Barcelona’s intentions. Although Barcelona has yet to make an official offer, sporting director Deco has prepared a list of alternatives should the Álvarez deal collapse.
Atlético Madrid remains resolute in blocking Álvarez’s transfer to Barcelona. If their position does not soften, the Catalans stand to lose their primary attacking target. Along with the dropped pursuit of Harry Kane, Barcelona have also failed to secure Bournemouth’s young striker Eli Junior Kroupi, as the Premier League club has closed the door to his departure.
This narrowing of available options places Núñez among the few credible targets who could fit Barcelona’s playing style. However, financial demands and contractual difficulties mean negotiations will be challenging. The club seeks a balance between cost, sporting value, and timely arrival to provide coach Hansi Flick with an effective attacking weapon ahead of the new season.
The transfer landscape underscores Barcelona’s limited possibilities due to resistance from competitor clubs and the high prices of suitably skilled forwards. At present, Núñez acts as a reserve option, but with the uncertainty surrounding Álvarez’s move, he may become a priority in the coming weeks.
