Brian Farinas has caught attention with his strong start to Barcelona’s preseason, prompting the club to reconsider its plans for the midfielder.
Barcelona’s sporting director Deco held a meeting with Farinas’ agent, Borja Garcia, to discuss the 19-year-old’s development pathway after the player stood out in early training sessions under coach Hansi Flick.
Earlier reports mentioned that Barcelona and Girona were close to an agreement for the Catalan club to acquire 50% of Farinas’ rights for around €1.5 million. That move is now on hold.
The main reason is the coach’s impression. Flick has been impressed by Farinas’ performances and wants to continue assessing him before final decisions are made.
Farinas had an excellent season with the reserve team and prepared diligently for preseason, taking only three days off in summer and working individually with a fitness coach.
This level of commitment has been noted internally at the club.
Barcelona considers Farinas ready for a higher level than reserve football. If he does not remain with the first team, the preference is for him to move to a club offering a more competitive environment than Barça Atlètic.
With Frenkie de Jong sidelined by injury, midfield positions in the first team are available, creating a genuine opportunity for Farinas to impress. He is expected to participate again in closed-door friendlies, including a match against CE Europa and the upcoming preseason camp in England.
Farinas has passed the toughest test by catching the coach’s attention and now seeks to prove that his strong preseason start reflects readiness to compete for a spot in Barcelona’s senior squad.
