Robert Lewandowski may be facing his final season in Barcelona colors as his contract runs out on June 30. The 37‑year‑old striker has not yet decided on his next destination and has attracted interest from Saudi Arabia and the United States among other places.
According to Janusz Michallik — a former US international, ESPN commentator and someone linked to the Chicago Fire franchise — the MLS side is making every effort to persuade Lewandowski and his wife Anna to move to Chicago. Michallik says the club is fully committed to securing the player.
Michallik explained that Chicago Fire intend not only to offer a playing contract to Lewandowski but also to provide professional support and opportunities for Anna, which the club believes could be an important factor in the family’s decision. The franchise is reportedly working to create conditions that would suit both the player and his spouse.
He also suggested that a move to Saudi Arabia might not be the best choice for the Lewandowski family in terms of quality of life. Discussions have covered multiple options, but a return to Germany is seen as unlikely, and staying in Spain would only make sense if it were with Barcelona.
On the wider European scene, Michallik pointed out that certain coaches and clubs may prefer different player profiles — he mentioned tactical fits and referenced Luis Enrique — and that major English clubs might not have space for Lewandowski’s profile. Italy was noted as a possible European destination.
Michallik stressed that if Barcelona present a contract offer for next season, there would be no further debate: the Catalan option would take precedence. Chicago Fire are considered an alternative only in the event Lewandowski leaves Barça.
He added that Chicago’s proposal is time‑sensitive. The club aims to build a super‑side and wants a plan B ready; if talks with Lewandowski fail, they will move on to other targets. That means the Fire have a deadline on their side of negotiations.
Michallik also highlighted what MLS could offer a world‑class player at this stage of his career: a fresh challenge and a role as the team’s focal point, where a 38‑year‑old Lewandowski would attract significant attention. He avoided detailed remarks about Gregg Berhalter specifically but reiterated that Chicago know how to attract both Robert and Anna.
For now, Lewandowski has asked for a little more time before confirming his next steps, and negotiations are ongoing.
