Danish center-back Andreas Christensen has extended his contract with FC Barcelona for one more season. Despite a series of physical setbacks, including muscle, ankle, and Achilles injuries, as well as a serious partial ACL tear in December 2025, the player will remain part of the squad for the 2026/27 campaign.
Christensen joined Barcelona in 2022 as a free agent from Chelsea. Over the past two seasons, his playing time was severely restricted by frequent injuries. In the 2024/25 season, he featured for only 259 minutes, and in 2025/26, just over 500 minutes across all competitions. His significant knee injury last December sidelined him for the remainder of that season, returning only in the final match.
The club offered him a renewal on reduced terms, with bonuses tied to appearances — a proposal both sides ultimately agreed upon. Barcelona's sporting management values Christensen for his ball-playing ability out of defense, defensive reading of the game, professionalism, and versatility, as he can also operate as a defensive midfielder.
By securing this extension, Barcelona lessens the immediate need to pursue a new central defender in the current transfer market. Christensen will serve as an experienced backup option, providing depth and cover for the backline when needed.
The next season will reveal whether Christensen can regain fitness consistency and regular playing time, but the club continues to rely on his experience and technical qualities in defense.
