At just 19 years old, Xavi Espart has already made a mark as a versatile player capable of performing both as a fullback and a defensive midfielder. Barcelona’s coach Hansi Flick highlighted this flexibility, comparing Espart’s ability to Philipp Lahm for his positional adaptability.
During the 2025/26 season, Espart gained valuable experience playing for Barcelona’s first team, primarily positioned on the flank. After the club season ended, he focused on preparing for the UEFA European Under-19 Championship, where he has been a crucial pivot for Spain’s squad. In the semifinal against Croatia, Espart played the full 90 minutes, scoring his second goal of the tournament and adding an assist in earlier matches.
Spain advanced to the final to face the winner of Germany vs. Ukraine. Espart intends to join Barcelona’s preseason training under Hansi Flick immediately after the tournament, aiming to establish himself in the first team for the 2027/28 season.
Despite interest from several European clubs, Xavi is determined to stay at Barcelona and continue his development at the club he has grown up in. He realizes the challenges ahead, including stiff competition for playing time and adjusting to top-level football.
