Marc-Andre ter Stegen is nearing the completion of his loan transfer from FC Barcelona to Ajax. The German goalkeeper is expected to travel to Amsterdam soon to undergo his medical examination before becoming the Dutch club’s first-choice keeper.
The loan deal is reportedly agreed upon, pending only the successful passing of medical tests. At 34 years old, ter Stegen is seen by Ajax as a significant reinforcement, with both Jordi Cruyff and Michel supporting the move.
However, some voices in the Netherlands have expressed doubts. Journalist Valentijn Driessen remarked that they are bringing in a goalkeeper “who used to be good in the past,” while Johan Derksen pointed out ter Stegen’s injury record, highlighting that he has played only three matches in 22 months due to fitness issues.
From Barcelona’s perspective, the transfer aligns with the club’s need to reduce wage expenses under coach Hansi Flick, while giving their long-serving captain a chance for regular game time.
The risk for Ajax lies in ter Stegen’s fitness following a difficult period. Yet, if he remains healthy, his experience, leadership, and ball skills could prove valuable. For Barcelona, securing this loan deal is key to financial flexibility and providing the player with a fresh start.
