Barcelona’s restructuring extends beyond the playing squad to significant modifications in the coaching staff.

Preparing for the 2027/28 season, the club has overhauled its first-team fitness department. Following the recent departure of Julio Tous, fitness trainers Rafa Maldonado and German Fernández will also leave the first-team setup.

Maldonado’s long-term status with the club remains uncertain, while Fernández is expected to continue working with Barça Atlètic, staying within the club’s structure.

These changes form part of a broader restructuring approved by head coach Hansi Flick, sparked by recurring injury issues and player recovery challenges throughout the past season.

Leadership of the fitness department now lies with Benjamin Kugel, appointed as the new head of the first team’s physical performance unit. He will collaborate with Pepe Conde, Milos Mallol, and Andres Martin, all of whom remain part of Flick’s coaching staff.

Initially, Flick had entrusted Julio Tous with greater responsibilities, including overseeing injured player rehabilitation. However, a series of fitness setbacks led Flick to reconsider, removing some responsibilities from Tous. Reports indicate a deterioration in their relationship, culminating in a loss of trust and prompting the ongoing departmental restructuring.

These personnel changes represent some of the most significant backroom staff adjustments at Barcelona in recent years and aim to enhance the team’s physical performance.
