One of Barcelona's tasks this season is to recover the solidity and level they showed last campaign on the full-back positions, a role that currently lacks stability. Without rushing to conclusions or scapegoating, the first half against Atlético — poor in intensity and set-up — highlighted many problems, and a large part of those issues came through the wings: both starting full-backs delivered a subpar performance.

Last season Jules Koundé was excellent and contributed significantly in attack, but this campaign he has been far from that level. He is struggling to find consistency and, above all, his defensive pressing is not what was expected.

There are also concerns about Alejandro Balde's defensive form. His recoveries against Atlético left much to be desired — both tactically and in duels, his intensity suggested a lack of confidence. Naturally, Balde is viewed as a long-term prospect on the left, but more performance is expected from him now.

The coaching staff had given a gentle warning some time ago to demand more from both wing-backs, but so far the reaction and regularity have not materialized. That said, nobody questions the standing of Balde or Koundé as players; the issue is restoring the reliability they showed last season.

The situation is also affected by arrivals: João Cancelo was not signed to automatically displace the incumbents, and he has not shown the defensive level required for big matches. On the left flank there is also Gerard as an option to rotate in, who has previously shown defensive solidity.

The technical staff will continue working to regain the best versions of both players, essential ahead of important ties such as the trip to the Metropolitano and Champions League knockout rounds. The demand is maximal: errors of the calibre seen against Atlético cannot be repeated. Beyond that, it is vital to re-harmonize the high press if the team wants to sustain an advanced line.
