Fermin López has emerged as one of Barcelona’s standout performers in 2025–26. At 22 years old he has taken on a leading role under Hansi Flick amid a season where injuries have limited players like Dani Olmo, Pedri and Raphinha. López has already registered 20 goal contributions this campaign (10 goals and 10 assists in 24 matches) and his rise from a fringe youth player to a key first-team figure has been rapid but hard-fought.

López began playing football at seven with his local side El Campillo (2010–2011), then moved into Recreativo’s youth system in the Spanish fourth tier before being recruited by Real Betis’ academy in 2012. It was at Betis that he developed as an attacking midfielder with a nose for goals, and in 2016 Barcelona brought him to La Masia when he was 13. Coaches at the academy concentrated on improving both his physical attributes and his technical game.

Early on he had limited minutes for Barcelona’s youth sides — just three appearances for the U19s and one outing for Barça Atlètic — and in 2022 the club decided he needed senior minutes. At 19 he went on loan to third-division Linares, a move that initially felt like a step back but ultimately proved vital for his growth.

At Linares López enjoyed a productive season in the Primera Federación, scoring 12 league goals and adding four assists in 37 matches. Barcelona took notice and recalled him in 2023. He made a strong impression in the preseason, contributing a goal and an assist in a 3–0 friendly win over Real Madrid, which helped him earn opportunities with the first team.

López’s official breakthrough began in 2023–24. He made his league debut in a 4–3 victory over Villarreal and became a regular impact substitute, scoring his first La Liga goal in a 2–2 draw with Mallorca after coming off the bench. That season he finished with eight league goals — three scored as a substitute and five as a starter — and struck seven times in the final 12 matches. Across all competitions he netted 11 goals, second only to Robert Lewandowski’s 26 for Barcelona that campaign, though some supporters felt he should have been given more starts and operated more often in his natural No.10 role.

The arrival of Hansi Flick in summer 2024 proved pivotal. Flick trusted López more frequently in his preferred attacking number 10 role, which allowed the player to express himself tactically and increase his influence. In Flick’s first season López made 46 appearances, starting 22 matches, and recorded eight goals and nine assists. He produced notable displays in the Champions League, supplying two assists in the 4–1 victory over Bayern Munich in the group stage and adding two more in the quarter-final tie with Borussia Dortmund.

In 2025/26 López has hit a career high in goal contributions: 10 goals and 10 assists in 24 appearances so far. Memorable moments include a Champions League hat-trick against Olympiacos and a brace in the win over Slavia Prague. He was also instrumental in Barcelona’s Spanish Supercopa success — scoring twice and setting up two goals in the 5–0 win over Athletic Club, and providing an assist in the 3–2 victory against Real Madrid. Within fewer than three seasons in the senior team he has already collected La Liga, the Copa del Rey and two Spanish Super Cups.

Internationally, López has also enjoyed success. He was part of Spain’s Euro 2024 winning squad and won an Olympic gold medal with Spain’s U23s at the 2024 Summer Games. Those honours, together with his club form, have driven up his market valuation.

The numbers chart a striking rise: in January 2023, while at Linares, his market value was roughly €100,000. By January 2024 it had climbed to €8m, and by January 2025 it reached €50m. Currently in the 2025/26 season his valuation is around €70m, placing him as Barcelona’s fifth-most valuable player and above Dani Olmo, who is rated at €60m. Reports linked Chelsea with a possible €75m offer in the summer of 2025, but Barcelona turned down interest and López showed no strong desire to move to the Premier League.

Regarding availability, López has generally been dependable. He avoided injury in 2023/24, missed seven matches in 2024/25 due to a thigh problem that sidelined him for just over a month, and has missed six games in the 2025/26 season with minor hip and calf issues — nothing that has forced a prolonged layoff. In a season when other creative options have struggled with fitness, his availability has proven a valuable asset for Flick.

Off the pitch López keeps a low-key personal life. He is in a relationship with Berta Gallardo, a law student and model; the pair began dating in early 2024 and were seen together after Spain’s Euro 2024 victory. Reports note Gallardo has a tattoo with his name, and the couple appear to value privacy.

Looking ahead, the ceiling seems high for the 22-year-old. He still has areas to refine — physical robustness and temperamental control in matches — but if he maintains his current trajectory he could become as indispensable as some of the squad’s most influential attackers. Short-term aims include helping Barcelona retain the La Liga title in 2025/26 and aiming for European success in the Champions League. He is also a near-certain selection for Spain at the 2026 World Cup, where continued form could see him play a prominent role. While not yet a Ballon d’Or contender on the level of some peers, further consistent goal contributions could put him in contention for major individual honours down the line.
