Barcelona’s sporting director Deco gave an in-depth interview to Globoesporte, addressing the team's defensive issues, recent improvements, and the long-term vision under Joan Laporta.
This season, Barcelona has conceded in every Champions League game, raising concerns about defensive solidity. Deco attributes these challenges not to individual players but to the team’s aggressive, high-pressing philosophy. When the team’s pressing intensity drops, gaps appear behind the defense. Still, Deco says the defense has improved significantly in this regard.
He also highlighted the strong mentality the squad has maintained during a difficult period. Instead of focusing solely on results, Deco emphasized the importance of the club’s broader direction. Laporta’s leadership, with five years remaining, is building a competitive side capable of challenging domestic rivals like Real Madrid and Atletico and facing financially stronger European clubs.
Deco underscored the solid relationship with head coach Flick, whose strategic and tactical vision aligns closely with club management. Youth development and prudent transfer decisions are key to forming a competitive squad without overspending.
Regarding his own future, Deco is open to continuing with the club under Laporta but emphasizes the need to deliver consistent results annually.
