La Masia has continued producing young talents who join Barcelona's first team, exemplified by players like Lamine Yamal and Gavi.
Nonetheless, not all academy players secure a place in the senior squad; some move on to find regular playing time elsewhere. One such player is 19-year-old defender Eman Kospo, who left Barça last summer to join Fiorentina.
Kospo described leaving La Masia as “the hardest thing I’ve done so far.” He explained, “Playing for a club with such history, you don’t want to leave. But I felt I needed to take the next step, especially with an offer for a first-team contract in Serie A.”
During his two years with La Masia, Kospo achieved significant success, including winning all trophies with the Juvenil team. However, being told he would spend pre-season with Barça Atlètic rather than the first team—and Barça B’s relegation to the fourth division—complicated his prospects. He admitted feeling frustrated and uncertain about his future since the club declined to offer him a new contract.
He emphasized the importance of contract security but was ultimately denied. These factors contributed to his decision to leave for Fiorentina.
Kospo was a key figure in the Juvenil squad that won the UEFA Youth League under Juliano Belletti. He highlighted the competition’s high level and noted that many of his former teammates deserve first-team opportunities at Barcelona.
Kospo’s story highlights the challenges faced by young players at a world-class academy: despite success and recognition, the path to the senior team can be limited by club strategy and circumstances.
His experience underlines the need for a balanced approach to youth development and career planning aligned with professional realities.
