Following a short break with Barça Legends, sporting director Deco has returned to Barcelona to continue squad planning for the 2026/27 season.
The Portuguese executive is becoming one of the club’s most important figures this summer. For the first time since taking charge, Deco will operate under La Liga’s 1:1 financial rule, granting significantly greater flexibility in the transfer market.
Inside the club, there is strong confidence in Deco’s work, fully supported by president Joan Laporta and the board. According to AS, Barcelona expects to have more than €100 million available for transfers, excluding income from player sales.
One priority is signing a new centre-forward to replace Robert Lewandowski. Barcelona has not abandoned their interest in Julián Álvarez from Atlético Madrid despite expected difficult negotiations, and Deco keeps alternative options in reserve.
Several deals have already been completed. Anthony Gordon was signed for €70 million plus €10 million in add-ons, beating competition including Bayern Munich. Barcelona also made Egyptian youngster Hamza Abdelkarim’s transfer permanent for €1.5 million.
On the outgoing side, Inaki Peña is expected to join Panathinaikos, Ansu Fati is heading towards a permanent exit, and Diego Kochen will go on loan to Danish club Lyngby.
Deco’s work over the last two summers has earned full trust. He addressed the goalkeeper situation by signing Joan Garcia for €25 million, who became a key player. The club also loaned Marcus Rashford, who delivered impressive numbers despite limited starts.
Over two years, Deco has balanced sporting competitiveness with financial sustainability, generating a positive balance from sales, loan fees, and future transfer percentages, while strengthening the squad and securing renewals.
With the return to more normal financial conditions, Deco has a unique opportunity to elevate coach Flick’s project and strengthen Barcelona’s challenge in the Champions League.
