FC Barcelona is implementing a fundamental change in its recruitment policy supervised by Sporting Director Deco. Traditionally known for signing technically gifted, often smaller players, the club is now placing greater emphasis on physical attributes such as speed and strength among defenders.

Over the past year, there was a change in the scouting department: Head Scout Paulo Araujo departed and was replaced by Joao Amaral. This shift aligns with the club's ambition to recruit highly talented teenagers before they gain wider recognition. Recent additions to the under-19 squad and Barça Atlètic include Noah Darvich, Mikayil Faye, Ibrahim Diarra, with Juwensley Onstein and Patricio Pacifico joining this season.

In response to the evolving style of European football favoring quicker transitions and higher tempo, the scouting team has been directed to target defenders with more imposing physical presence. Examples include Onstein and new target Luca Herrington, a 192cm centre-back from Colorado Rapids currently representing Australia at the World Cup.

For the first team, players such as Micky van de Ven, Luka Vuskovic, and Alessandro Bastoni, all linked with Barcelona, fit this updated directive. Additionally, coach Hansi Flick's trust in young defenders Marc Bernal and Gerard Martin reflects this trend.

This recruitment adjustment corresponds with adapting to modern football demands while respecting La Liga’s regulatory framework and the club’s financial commitments.
