FC Barcelona has officially announced the extension of Danish defender Andreas Christensen’s contract until the summer of 2028. The new deal adds two years to his current agreement, with a mutual option to terminate after the 2026/27 season.

The 30-year-old joined Barcelona in the summer of 2022 as a free agent following the expiration of his Chelsea contract. He quickly became a key part of the La Liga title-winning squad in his debut season, but his subsequent campaigns have been hampered by recurring injuries, including a partial ACL tear sustained in December that sidelined him for the entire second half of the last season.

Despite these challenges, the club’s management and head coach Hans Flick have shown strong faith in Christensen’s professionalism and versatility. He can operate both as a central defender and a defensive midfielder. Christensen’s loyalty to Barcelona is clear as he opted to reject financially higher offers from clubs across Europe and the Middle East, favoring to remain in the city and at a club where he feels at home.

From a financial perspective, the renewal also aids the club’s wage structure ahead of the 2026/27 campaign. The contract includes a clause allowing either party to end the contract after one year of extension, providing flexibility for both player and club.

Christensen bolsters Barcelona’s defensive depth, competing for a starting spot alongside players like Pau Cubarsí, Gerard Martín, Eric Garcia, and Ronald Araújo. Following a season disrupted by injury, he hopes to stay fit and consistently contribute to the team in the upcoming campaign.
