Published 09/02/2026, by Connell Edgar-Jones. Barcelona are actively considering a major attacking signing for the summer of 2026 as they look for a long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski, with Julian Alvarez emerging as a top target.

So far there has been no concrete approach from the club, and much of Barcelona's pursuit hinges on the outcome of the club's presidential election. Media reports suggested that representatives of Alvarez had been in contact with some presidential hopefuls about a potential move to Catalonia next summer, but Alvarez's agent, Fernando Hidalgo, has denied those reports.

Beyond internal club politics, Barcelona will face stiff competition from the Premier League: both Chelsea and Arsenal are reportedly keen on securing the Argentine as they seek attacking reinforcements ahead of the summer window. SPORT has highlighted interest from those English clubs.

Alvarez himself appears to prefer staying in La Liga and could be attracted to a move to Catalonia, yet Atlético Madrid have him tied to a contract through the summer of 2030. Having spent heavily to bring him from Manchester City in 2024, Atlético are unlikely to let him go easily.

If Atlético do agree to sell, they are expected to demand a significant fee—likely in excess of €100 million—which could create a financial hurdle for Barcelona while posing less of an obstacle for the Premier League clubs. Therefore, the upcoming summer could prove crucial for Alvarez's future.
