Barcelona continues its search for a long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski, with Julián Álvarez’s name frequently popping up. However, the chances of the Argentine forward moving from Atlético Madrid to Barça appear slim.
Atlético Madrid has taken a firm stance, refusing to negotiate with Barcelona over Álvarez’s sale. The club is determined to keep the striker, tied to them until 2030 with a hefty €500 million release clause, unwilling to strengthen a direct La Liga rival.
This position hardened after Álvarez’s recent comments, where he neither confirmed nor denied staying at Atlético beyond the current season but expressed happiness at the club. Atlético sees the ongoing transfer speculation as unwelcome distraction.
If Álvarez departs, Atlético would only entertain offers around €150 million, with Premier League clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea reportedly showing interest.
Barcelona, meanwhile, is constrained financially. The club aims to comply with La Liga’s 1:1 spending rule and has budgeted up to €100 million (including bonuses) for a new striker, effectively ruling out Álvarez under current conditions.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta recently acknowledged Álvarez’s quality but emphasized the club won’t engage in an open-ended bidding war, expecting players to show a clear desire to join and be available at a reasonable price. Consequently, Atlético holds a strong negotiating position, leaving Barcelona to seek alternatives.
