Ronald Araujo’s interview with Mundo Deportivo has resonated beyond Barcelona and made waves in Madrid, particularly inside Atlético de Madrid. In the conversation the Uruguayan centre-back praised Argentina forward Julián Álvarez, describing him as one of the top strikers and suggesting the very best players should be at the best club — an obvious nod to Barcelona. Those remarks have not gone down well in Atlético’s dressing room or hierarchy.
Atlético’s reaction is shaped by several factors. The rojiblancos have been protecting and backing Álvarez while he struggles; he has not scored in LaLiga since November and is currently far from the level he previously showed. Teammates are looking after him and are confident he will recover his form.
Moreover, Araujo’s comments came just before the two teams meet in the Copa del Rey Mapfre semi-finals, drawing attention to both Álvarez and Atlético at an awkward moment. The sensitivity is heightened by months of transfer talk linking Barcelona with Álvarez, so any statement that appears to associate the player with Barça or to imply Atlético is not the top destination is bound to sting.
Within Atlético they concede Araujo likely did not intend harm, but they believe his words diminish the club by implying top players should play for Barcelona. Such remarks are unwelcome in the red-and-white camp and could well be used as additional motivation for Thursday’s fixture at the Metropolitano.
