Szczesny signed a two-year contract with Barcelona last summer after coming out of retirement the previous October to cover for Marc-André ter Stegen’s serious knee injury. While dependable when called upon, Szczesny has revealed that a chronic arm injury has made each training session more painful and mentally challenging.
He stated, "What is easier for me to face, the passage of time in my personal or professional life? The professional one. Each training session is more painful for me, it is suffering. It requires a lot more energy, both physically and mentally. It costs me mental energy to get up in the morning; my body struggles more every day. But I accept this as a daily challenge, to get up and give it my all. After training, I feel I can still do it, although it’s not easy."
Barcelona holds the option to unilaterally terminate Szczesny’s contract this summer by activating a €2 million break clause if both parties agree it is the best solution. It remains unclear whether the club intends to exercise this option.
Should Szczesny leave, Barcelona is set to make significant changes in the goalkeeping department, also parting ways with Marc-André ter Stegen and Inaki Pena. The club is reportedly targeting Alex Remiro from Real Sociedad as a possible reinforcement. The evolution of Szczesny’s situation will heavily influence the club’s plans moving forward.
