Ronald Araujo is entering his seventh season with Barcelona determined to prove his importance to the squad. The 27-year-old center-back had limited playing time last season and now aims to convince coach Hansi Flick that he still has a key role to play in the team’s defense.
The situation remains complex, as Flick favors Gerard Piqué, Pau Cubarsí, and Eric Garcia in central defense, while Andreas Christensen’s contract was recently extended at the coach’s request. Barcelona has also shown interest in Aymeric Laporte, adding uncertainty to Araujo’s future.
Much depends on the minutes Araujo will get during preseason matches. He is currently recovering from an injury suffered in a training session with Uruguay, which ruled him out of the World Cup. Since his return, he has been training individually and gradually rejoining group sessions.
Araujo missed the first preseason friendly against CE Europa but is expected to join the squad for their training camp in England, where Barcelona will face Birmingham City and Preston North End. Following that, the team will play against Udinese and Nottingham Forest in Italy and conclude the preseason with the Gamper Trophy against Al Ahly.
Depending on his involvement and performance in these matches, Araujo will decide whether to stay at Barcelona or seek regular playing time elsewhere. The club is open to letting him leave if he requests so, keeping the door open for a potential summer exit.
Although Araujo’s contract runs until June 2031, his future at Barcelona hinges on the playing time he secures during this preseason.
