Cristian Romero Likely to Leave Barcelona Amid Financial Issues
Cristian Romero, the Argentine defender targeted by Barcelona to strengthen their central defense, may leave the club without making the move to Catalonia. According to Spanish media, Romero has started to consider other options, with Inter Milan expressing solid interest and exploring a possible loan with an obligation to buy.
Barcelona's sporting director Deco previously met with Romero’s representatives, and the World Cup winner ranks among the preferred candidates for Hans Flick’s defensive line. However, Tottenham’s asking price of around €50 million remains a significant obstacle, deemed excessive by Barcelona in its current financial situation.
Adding to the challenge is the crowded centre-back roster, including Pau Cubarsí, Ronald Araújo, Andreas Christensen, Eric Garcia, and Gerard Martin. This makes any significant investment on a new defender contingent on selling one of these players first. Consequently, Barcelona has been unable to advance beyond an initial expression of interest.
Romero offers aggression, organizational leadership, and top-level experience from his time at Atalanta and Tottenham. His willingness to return to Italy lends credibility to Inter’s approach.
Barcelona is also monitoring other defensive options like Aymeric Laporte, valued for his experience, left-footedness, and compatibility with younger defenders such as Cubarsí. Without a swift defensive departure generating funds, Romero might complete a move elsewhere before Barcelona is ready to act.
