Marc-André ter Stegen, the captain of FC Barcelona, may have played his last game for the club during a preseason friendly against CE Europa. His loan move to Ajax is in its final stages and is expected to be completed within days.
The 34-year-old goalkeeper will not travel with Barcelona’s squad to their preseason training camp in England. Instead, he is likely to head to Amsterdam to begin a new chapter under Ajax manager Michel, who previously coached him during a brief loan spell at Girona.
Though Ter Stegen still has one year left on his Barcelona contract after the loan ends, he is no longer part of coach Hansi Flick’s plans. Focused on seizing the opportunity Ajax offers, Ter Stegen could also participate in Ajax’s UEFA Conference League qualifiers if the move finalizes before July 31.
If the move is completed, it will close an extraordinary chapter for Ter Stegen at Barcelona, where he played 423 matches across 12 seasons and won 21 major trophies, including the UEFA Champions League and seven La Liga titles. The upcoming season may become a pivotal period for the experienced goalkeeper’s future.
