Barcelona centre-back Pau Cubarsi has emerged as a key figure for Spain at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In a recent interview, he reflected on his team’s performance and upcoming challenges.

"We started very well at the back. In attack, during the first game against Cape Verde, we lacked ball circulation. In the second half, we increased aggressiveness and intensity, which showed on the pitch and helped us achieve a good result," Cubarsi explained.

He also shared how comfortable he feels on the world’s biggest stage: "I feel very fast, comfortable, I’m feeling very good and comfortable." Despite already becoming one of Spain’s defensive leaders, he stressed continual improvement: "I always try to be better every day, whether I’m on a good streak or not so good. I try to help and be there for the team so we can win."

When asked about the possibility of facing Lionel Messi in a World Cup final, Cubarsi called it a dream come true: "It would be a dream, especially because it would mean I’m in a World Cup final. It would be a chance to win it. If it were against Messi, it really would be a dream I’ve had since I was a child."

He also discussed his relationship with teammate Ronald Araujo, recalling that after the group draw they exchanged messages about wanting to beat each other, but hadn’t been in recent contact. Regarding new Barcelona arrivals Julian Alvarez and Anthony Gordon, Cubarsi acknowledged their quality and said he’s focused on supporting the current squad.

This interview reveals a young player with maturity on the pitch and vivid ambitions fueled by respect for football legends.
