Jordi Codina, responsible for sports in Xavi Vilajoana’s presidential pre-candidacy at FC Barcelona, spoke about key aspects of the project.
He emphasized the importance of transversal sports management at the club, where decisions are made collectively, and highlighted the priority of developing La Masia as the 'philosopher's stone' of the sporting project. Codina stressed that the club should prioritize homegrown players from the academy while complementing the squad with experienced signings.
Regarding protecting La Masia’s talent amid financial pressures, Codina stated that legal strategies are being developed to make it more difficult for players to leave easily.
He also mentioned that coach Hansi Flick is a vital part of the project and is supported, though alternatives are considered if he decides to leave.
On the squad front, Codina acknowledged some imbalances and the necessity to reinforce the central defender and striker positions. Concerning the potential signing of Harry Kane, he said conversations have taken place and the player might be interested, but financial realities and negotiations with both the currently existing club and Kane himself need to be addressed.
In women’s football, Vilajoana’s team aims to invest and develop the squad while maintaining quality and preventing budget cuts and player departures despite competition from other European clubs.
For other club sections, an increased budget is planned, contingent on efficient use of funds and revenue growth, Codina highlighted.
Regarding possible participation in a European NBA competition, he noted the importance of considering all proposals openly, without ruling out any options.
