Former Real Madrid midfielder and World Cup winner Sami Khedira recently spoke to AS, reflecting on the current state of European football, and his comments about Barcelona have sparked debate.

Under Hansi Flick, Barcelona have faced turbulence in recent weeks, losing two of their last three matches. Khedira believes such phases are natural over a long season.

Regarding Barcelona’s situation, he explained, “Crises in results are part of every season. Perhaps the timing is good: the Champions League round of 16 is still to come, and the next Clásico is in May, so there is still time.

“Barcelona’s style is risky: if the ball doesn’t go in and Lamine isn’t in form, the defense can’t save them. It is often said that titles are won by the defense. At Barcelona, they have only won by the attack. Flick is playing a bold style that usually pays off.”

Khedira also touched on the difficult moment facing German goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, who lost his undisputed starting spot at club level and then suffered another injury setback at a crucial time.

“It’s one of the cruellest stories. You finally have the opportunity to be number one, and in a World Cup no less, and then you get injured again. It’s really tough. As an athlete, I feel really sorry for him,” he said.

He also noted that Baumann is doing well, stating that while he is not Neuer, he has performed well for Germany, and Germany could be one of the favorites to win the World Cup.
