During the Copa del Rey clash against Atlético, Barcelona defenders Jules Kounde and Alejandro Balde sustained hamstring injuries (biceps femoris).
Kounde was substituted after just 11 minutes with a mid-belly hamstring injury in his left thigh. Balde came on but could not finish the game due to a distal hamstring injury. Barcelona’s official statement estimates Balde’s recovery will take about four weeks; Kounde’s timeline remains uncertain and will depend on his rehabilitation progress.
Both players are set to miss upcoming La Liga fixtures against Athletic Club, Sevilla, Rayo Vallecano, and the Champions League round of 16 second leg versus Newcastle. Coach Hansi Flick will have to adjust the defensive lineup, with Joao Cancelo expected to maintain his starting position and Eric Garcia returning from suspension.
The absence of Kounde and Balde presents a defensive challenge for Barcelona as they pursue success in domestic and European competitions this season.
