Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen is on the verge of joining Ajax on loan.
The loan agreement has been reached and the player is scheduled to undergo a medical examination in Amsterdam in the coming days. Ter Stegen aims to become Ajax’s first-choice keeper.
The move has sparked criticism in the Netherlands due to the goalkeeper’s injury record. Journalist Valentijn Driessen commented that Ter Stegen’s best days are behind him, while pundit Johan Derksen highlighted that he has played only three matches in 22 months because of persistent injuries.
Despite doubts, Ajax’s sporting director Jordi Cruyff and new coach Michel, who previously worked with Ter Stegen during his Girona loan, fully back the transfer. Michel is confident Ter Stegen can be a key figure if he stays injury-free. The deal includes an option to buy should his performances justify it.
For Barcelona, the financial benefit is limited. The majority of Ter Stegen’s substantial salary will remain with Barcelona, as Ajax will only cover a portion depending on how many matches he plays. Therefore, meaningful savings hinge on his regular presence and fitness.
The loan move to Ajax appears imminent, awaiting official confirmation following the medical check.
