Flick made it clear before kick-off at Spotify Camp Nou that de Jong’s omission was not simple rotation but related to his fitness level. The player has been managing a minor pubic discomfort for a few days, and the staff chose to rest him to avoid any aggravation.
According to an update from Diario AS, the issue is considered minor and should not prevent de Jong from being available for Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final midweek. The gap between the Mallorca win and the first semi match is more than 72 hours, giving him adequate time to recover and be fully fit.
With Pedri ruled out for the first leg, de Jong is expected to bear significant responsibility in midfield. He is likely to start alongside Fermin Lopez and Dani Olmo, a midfield trio that has shown good understanding recently.
This season in La Liga de Jong has made 17 appearances, including 14 starts, contributed four assists, and has posted an average pass completion around 95% with over 75 touches per game.
The precautionary decision is viewed as a boost to Flick’s plans: preserving the captain now increases the chances he will be ready — possibly even start — for the crucial midweek clash with Diego Simeone’s side.
