Barcelona’s transfer planning for defensive reinforcements has evolved, with head coach Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco now viewing the signing of a central defender as less of an immediate priority. Previously considered essential, the approach has shifted as the season progressed.

The departure of Iñigo Martínez last summer posed challenges, but the emergence of young defenders Pau Cubarsí (19 years old) and Gerard Martín has greatly boosted the team's confidence in this sector. Cubarsí featured in 48 matches and has impressively taken on a leadership role in defense, while Martín became a regular starter from November and played 51 matches.

The squad also counts on Ronald Araújo, Eric García, Jules Koundé, and Christensen, who is in the process of renewing his contract. Additionally, the possibility of moving Frenkie de Jong back into the defensive line is being considered. As a result, immediate reinforcement in central defense is no longer critical, although the club remains open to opportunities arising from market options or player departures.

The key transfer targets for the upcoming summer remain a striker and a left-back. On the left side of defense, retaining João Cancelo is important. Barcelona has explored options in defense, including interest in Alessandro Bastoni from Inter and Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven, maintaining close market surveillance.

Furthermore, Barcelona is close to signing 19-year-old Jorge Salinas from Racing Santander. Salinas primarily plays as a left-back but can also cover central defense. The club intends for him to remain at Racing Santander next season (2026/27) to continue his development.

Barcelona’s defensive transfer strategy is adopting a more flexible approach based on the growth of its young players and the possibility to pursue signings only when truly beneficial.
