Barcelona lost the La Liga lead at Montilivi in a match that featured many incidents: missed chances in the first half (including a penalty), Michel's belief in Girona's game plan, and the home side's victory.

Girona's mascot dog, La Canya, which usually lies on the pitch hours before kick‑off, approached Barcelona players as they inspected the field. Calmly, Dani Olmo, Gerard Marín, Ferran, Araújo, Fermín, Eric and Casadó played with her before the game.

Barcelona supporters who traveled to Montilivi turned their area into an animation section similar to a supporters' stand elsewhere; they kept cheering throughout the match and the players thanked them at the end despite the disappointment of the defeat.

Eric García received a warm reception in Montilivi: he had been on loan at Girona two seasons ago and left a strong impression that helped the club qualify for the Champions League. Local fans chanted “Eric, gironí” and gave him a big ovation when he had to leave the pitch injured; Eric returned the applause.

Hansi Flick was visibly upset with referee Soto Grado's performance at Montilivi and went to ask for explanations after the match. He had already voiced complaints during the game to the officials, not understanding why a foul on Koundé was not given in the play leading to Girona's second goal despite the bench monitor, and why Barcelona was not allowed to restart quickly after an offside because Soto Grado ordered the restart much further back than where the offence had been signalled.

Raphinha returned to the team after an injury layoff and looked set to take the penalty when Blind fouled Olmo early in the first half. In the end, Lamine asked for the ball and Raphinha handed it over. Lamine hit the post; Raphinha stayed frozen, then, unable to believe the miss, angrily headed straight for the dressing room.
