Marc-André Ter Stegen’s season has been challenging due to a serious injury sustained after a promising loan spell at Girona where he was regaining confidence and rhythm. This injury now casts doubt on his availability for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann acknowledged the difficulty of the situation but left the door open for Ter Stegen. He highlighted the goalkeeper’s experience and professionalism, praising his commitment to the national team even during his injury period. Nagelsmann expressed that they will patiently monitor Ter Stegen’s progress up until the very last moment.
However, Nagelsmann also warned that the chances of Ter Stegen making the tournament squad are very slim, mainly because the goalkeeper has played very little football in the past year, which complicates his return to full fitness. “He no longer feels pain in the area, but the chances of him making it to the World Cup are very, very slim,” the coach explained.
Ter Stegen continues his rehabilitation at Barcelona’s training facilities while maintaining contact with his teammates, sometimes traveling to Girona to be close to the squad during matches. If he manages to play a few games before the season’s end and shows good form, a late call-up to the German squad remains possible.
For Barcelona, Ter Stegen’s participation in the World Cup would be significant. It would increase his market value and open up potential transfer opportunities. Nevertheless, the goalkeeper faces a tough race against time and injury to return to competitive football.
