Barcelona’s pursuit of young defensive talent across Europe has identified several prospects, but not every target is ready to make the immediate step to the Catalan club. A recent example concerns Twente centre-back Ruud Nijsad, whose future now looks set to remain in the Netherlands.

In recent weeks Nijsad’s name featured in Barcelona’s scouting conversations. However, SPORT reports that the young defender will not be moving to the club any time soon, having opted to continue his development at Twente.

Negotiations over young talents are seldom straightforward, especially when players already have clear sporting ambitions. Many favour immediate first-team opportunities rather than time in reserve sides, and that preference appears to have been decisive in Nijsad’s case.

The 18-year-old has already taken important steps at senior level, appearing in 12 first-team matches for Twente and starting several of them, which has given him valuable professional experience at a very young age. Nijsad is a left-footed centre-back, a profile in demand across Europe.

His performances have attracted attention from multiple clubs, and Barcelona approached him in January with the intention of opening long-term talks ahead of a possible summer move. However, the pathway proposed by Barcelona did not fully match the player’s current situation.

The Catalan club could only offer him a place in the reserve team along with the chance to train with the first team. For a player already getting regular minutes in senior football, that option was less appealing.

According to reports from the Netherlands, Nijsad now has a verbal agreement to sign a long-term contract with Twente. The deal would allow him to continue his development with consistent first-team involvement, which appears to have been his main priority.
