Xavi Espart, a La Masia graduate and Spain U19 international, has delivered notable performances in the European Championship operating as a pivot midfielder.

While often deployed as a right-back at Barcelona, Espart returned to his original midfield position at the tournament, where he spent much of his youth development.

Across three matches, he accumulated nearly 200 minutes, scoring in the 7-0 win over Wales during the group stage and helping Spain under Paco Gallardo to reach the semi-finals.

His abilities to initiate attacks, select key passes, and contribute personality to the build-up play have been recognized as positive aspects of Spain’s campaign. This versatility is valuable for Barcelona’s tactical setup, where full-backs and midfielders frequently interchange roles on the pitch.

First-team coach Hansi Flick has already identified Espart as a player with both defensive and midfield instincts. The U19 displays reinforce that his strengths suit central midfield as well.

Espart now faces a significant opportunity during pre-season to convince Flick and secure a place in the first-team squad for the 2027/28 season. The upcoming semi-finals offer another chance to strengthen his case.

The progression of Xavi Espart will depend on how successfully he can translate his tournament performances into consistent contributions at Barcelona’s senior level.
