Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny opened up about his surprising comeback after announcing retirement in August 2024. Although he had planned to step away from football, he signed with Barcelona two months later to cover for the injured Ter Stegen.

In an interview with "GQ" magazine, Szczęsny explained he had no intention of continuing his career with any club except Barcelona, which convinced him to return. Remarkably, he played his first season without salary, refunding Juventus the compensation for early contract termination.

The Polish keeper also spoke candidly about his struggles with weight control in elite football. Player contracts involve heavy penalties for weight gain, and although he managed to stay within limits, Szczęsny admitted holding the club record for body fat percentage. He even faced locker room jokes—Robert Lewandowski once mocked his physique in the Polish national team dressing room.

Beyond physical challenges, Szczęsny revealed painful memories of his childhood and relationship with his father Maciej, a former goalkeeper. He described feeling fear and humiliation from his father’s public shaming. Szczęsny also dispelled the notion that he was destined to be a goalkeeper from a young age; he initially envisioned himself as a forward, with coaches deciding his position.

This candid insight into the life of a top footballer highlights that success is shaped not only by talent and determination but also by internal fears and personal struggles.
