Ronald Araujo, the 27-year-old centre-back for FC Barcelona, has spoken openly about the severe mental health challenges he faced during the 2025/26 season that led to a temporary break from football. His battle with depression was not only due to on-field struggles but was compounded by intense external pressures, including threats directed at his family and young children.
A key turning point was a Champions League match against Chelsea on November 25, where Araujo, already on a yellow card, was sent off. This incident mirrored his internal turmoil. He admitted struggling to share his feelings even with close ones, feeling disconnected from himself as a player and individual. The situation became so overwhelming that he asked Barcelona for a period of leave to prioritize his health.
Support from the club and professional help were pivotal in his recovery. Araujo highlighted the crucial role of his spiritual faith and personal reflection, including visits to sacred sites such as Bethlehem and Jerusalem, which helped restore his inner balance. After several months away, he returned to training and contributed significantly to Barcelona’s La Liga title win this season.
This experience marked a profound personal growth phase. Although his playing time was limited, he described 2025/26 as the most educative in his career, developing into a better husband, father, and gaining a fresh perspective on life’s priorities. He expressed deep gratitude to the club’s management, teammates, and fans, noting the stark contrast between online negativity and the real-world warmth he felt upon his return.
Araujo emphasized that being a professional footballer doesn’t exempt one from worries and anxieties. Despite the substantial earnings and status, players endure significant psychological pressure and external stress. He stated, "People think that because we are footballers and earn a lot of money, we don’t have concerns, but we do."
Looking ahead, Araujo remains fully committed to Barcelona where he is under contract until 2031. He is confident in his abilities and prepared to compete for a starting position, strengthened by the maturity and resilience he gained through his ordeal.
Currently, Araujo is focused on representing Uruguay at the 2026 World Cup across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Although sidelined last time due to injury, he is expected to make his World Cup debut this year despite a recent calf muscle injury. In the group stage, Uruguay will face Spain, whose squad includes several Barcelona teammates, fostering an atmosphere of friendly rivalry and camaraderie.
