With Barcelona’s presidential elections approaching, candidates including Joan Laporta have been campaigning heavily, promising a return of Lionel Messi to the club. Some have even used Messi’s name to boost their campaigns.
However, according to Catalunya Radio, Messi, through his representatives, has informed all presidential candidates that he will not return to Barcelona as a player. The current Inter Miami star has ruled out a final playing stint at Spotify Camp Nou.
Messi left Barcelona in 2021 due to the club's financial difficulties and Financial Fair Play regulations that prevented renewing his contract. Since then, he played for Paris Saint-Germain before moving to Inter Miami. While he remains deeply connected to Barcelona, Messi is open only to returning in a different role but not as a player.
This official stance dashes fans’ hopes for a last playing chapter at Barcelona and forces the club’s future leadership to explore other paths for competitiveness without relying on Messi’s on-field presence once again.
